11. Photograph
of a "Rape Victim"
is actually Souvenir Photograph Taken at a Brothel |
|
Chang's book also includes photographs relating to rape. One of them, Photograph 1, bears the following caption: "Japanese soldiers sometimes forced their victims to pose in pornographic pictures, which were kept as souvenirs of rape (courtesy of the Fitch family)." This is, without a doubt, a souvenir photograph. It shows, however, not a rape victim, but a prostitute and her customer at a brothel. Photograph 2, another version of this one (which has been cropped), also shows a Chinese man, presumably the owner of the brothel. Hata Ikuhiko
also used this photograph on p. 40 of his Modern History: Issues. He found
it in Taiwan, in a collection of photographs entitled An Abundance of
Ironclad Evidence. Needless to say, neither of these photographs have
anything to do with rape. |
